outline

concept

A Tokyo and Shanghai based design studio established by architects Kojima Shinya and Kojima Ayaka.
The contemporary society has become overloaded with information, and we are considerate through our projects to revive the superficial human relationships and the faded local characteristics. Even starting with just a humble local identity, we thrive to create a space to gather and generate a larger sustainable and reliable economy.
In addition, by questioning the homogenized materiality and uniform streets as a result of mass production, we aim to carry on and express the beauty and craftsmanship that is particular to that region through incorporating materials and details that can inherit its local climate and cultural background.
We also operate a renovation brand “ichijo-toma” with the theme of designing for “comfortable and beautiful Japanese lifestyle”.

mission

1. Temporary < > Continuation
Rather than only thinking about things in a temporary manner, we pursue a method that can generate continuation for hundreds of years beyond.
We are always interested in doing thorough research on the local people, identity, land characteristics, history, and culture for each project.
We value not only information from the Internet, but also invest in actually traveling to meet the local people, listen to their stories directly, and experience with them.
By meeting in person, we will build relationships with the local community from the initial planning stage, and we will also think about how to operate the project by interacting with local people.
Architecture should not just be designed for its client, but we also see it as an opportunity to consider the relationships between people, the environment, and the economy.

2. Homogeneous < > Local characteristics, raw materials, human sensibilities
Instead of mass-produced and homogenized buildings and townscapes, we hope to restore human sensibilities by using raw materials without averting our eyes from the individuality and locality of each piece of land.
Even the smallest expressions (details) can contain the message we want to convey.
By fusing raw materials and expressions that make use of the handiwork of local craftsmen, we aim to create spaces that pleases the five senses of humans, which cannot be created with standardized building materials alone.

3. Conclusion < > Improvements after construction
We always have a continuous attitude that extends beyond the completion of design.
Rather than being a design office where the work is considered to be finished when construction is completed, we believe the value in grasping the situation even after the completion of our design and continuously staying close to the long-term vision of the customer.
Furthermore with ichijo-toma, it is not just a renovation service, but an exploration inspired by the 21st century Japanese styled abandoned and creative way of living. Aside from design, we also host related workshops and develop products with the aim of inheriting craftsmen and traditional techniques.
Instead of an enclosed office space, our Gallery ichijo-toma has an open space to build continuous relationships with clients, friends, and the local residents.

使命

people

Shinya Kojima

Born in 1981. Shinya Kojima was attracted by the analog and hands-on relationships and moods (atmosphere) in which humans create indigenous architecture, so he moved to China after graduating. Since then, Shinya Kojima has emphasized the importance of the dialogues among people, local languages, meals, and customs in design, both in Japan and overseas. He hopes to create spaces that show the traces of being created by human hands which convey their true qualities.

Ayaka Kojima

Born in 1986. After living in Kyoto, Ayaka Kojima moved to the United States since her undergraduate studies. While immersed in the multicultural environment of downtown LA, she studied cutting-edge architectural theory at SCI-Arc and expanded the realm of her own design thinking. Upon returning to Japan, she felt that the vernacular architecture that comes from the local climate and history of Japan resonates with the fundamental sensibilities of human beings, so it has been her aim to design considering what can be passed down through generations.
First class registered architect. No.376705
