Commissioned by a fashion designer, this project was to design a mobile store for the world tour. Although the design was required by the client to be related to the concept of “Japanese-sum”, we suggested that, instead of designing a Japanese style architecture in a visual way, we sending a message to the world through the building: the issue of earthquakes in Japan that the construction industry has to face and the proposal of the solution to this problem from our vision.

Specifically, we customized approximately 1000 permeable disaster prevention hoods to build a diameter 8m, height 4m semicircle spherical lightweight store building by connecting them together.

Structural features are: ①Structure can be easily self-built with simple and convenient workability. ②In order to keep the soft curves of the hoods to the dome, we avoided adding rigid structural material to the edges of the hoods to make the frame structure, while chose BREATHAIR (soft and highly rebound cushion material) to connect the hoods together with waterproof zippers and magnets.

The disaster prevention hoods, with the combination of softness and strength, are linked together, piling up to a lightweight frame structure. This structure appears to have contradictory, but its feasibility has been proved by practice. The hoods underneath support the weight from above, increasing thickness and density of the air pressurized material. Besides, transparent acrylic rods are added inside of the hoods to reinforce the structure. Different layers of the hoods are made to have corresponding intensity adjustment. The printed pattern on the hoods are designed to have the client’s multi-colored clothing design style, creating a fancy space full of light and colors.

After the dismantlement of this pavilion in the future, the hoods will be donated to other earthquake-prone countries, for raising the awareness of disaster prevention, thus, achieving the requirement from the owner of making a “Japanese design”.
